A 12-year old girl from Idaho recently set the world record for a yellow perch. Her name is Tia Wiese, and her dad took her ice fishing on Lake Cascade last March.
As she tells Fish and Game, “I couldn’t stop smiling. It was the biggest perch I’ve seen. I was kind of hoping it was a state record.”
The reality of her catch was even more than she had hoped for as she and her father took the perch to a certified scale in Cascade. Coming in at an incredible 2 pounds and 11.68 ounces, it was a world record yellow perch.

It not only smashed the state record, but her dad learned that it could be in the neighborhood of world rankings.
The previous world record for yellow perch caught ice fishing with a tip-up was 2 pounds 6 ounces out of Sheep Pond, Mass.
Tia’s catch was recently confirmed as the largest yellow perch caught while ice fishing using a tip-up rod, anywhere in the world.
“He (her father) told me over the phone,” she says. “I was laughing so hard I was crying. It was funny.”
